The Central Arizona Project pumps 1.5 million acre feet of water per year, 336 miles and 2,900 vertical feet, from Lake Havasu on the Colorado River to population centers of Phoenix and Tucson. The CAP was the last and biggest large-scale project of the Bureau of Reclamation, and cost the US taxpayers over $3.3B by the time it was completed in 1995
The CAP provides over half of Arizona’s agricultural water and, due to drought in the Colorado River Watershed and dropping levels of Lake Mead, faces a significant reduction water supply in the coming years.
